Does this qualify as a half-smile?
It's at least a quizzical look, which has got to be one of the greatest expressions one can produce just in time for a photograph.
Whenever I see group portraits hanging on walls and in galleries and in family photo albums, I always have the greatest respect for the people with the quizzical expressions on their faces.
It says: "the rest of you look dreadfully corny. But I know better. This little smile is all you're getting."
Da Vinci too knew the power of the understated smile. And he was a pretty clever fellow.
